Is Your Website a Beautiful ‘Hotel Nowhere’ Lost in The Internet Wilderness?

    June 2nd, 2008

Lately it seems I’ve been explaining to more and more people about Internet Marketing. You see, for some reason folks think that IM (Internet Marketing) is really all about putting up a great looking website. It’s not - it’s so much more than that.

In fact, although a website is a crucial piece in the online marketing puzzle, you can still beat the best-looking website with great online marketing. And what still surprises me is after all the education, al the articles, all the proof, people still think, “If you build it (better) they will come!”

Sorry to disappoint folks - but that’s a dangerous assumption.

    — Just Do It Over

For instance, I was just speaking with a prospective client; they were explaining to me that their newly developed site was not working for them as they had hoped. During their explanation, they told me that they had a ’solution’ for their problem - they were going to replace all or part of the site with Flash elements.

I politely explained to them that Flash wasn’t necessarily going to solve their problem and what they had on their hands was a beautiful ‘Hotel Nowhere’ website, lost in the Internet Wilderness. A ‘do over’ wasn’t going to solve their problems. Permit me to explain my analogy - I think you’ll like it.

    — Hotel Nowhere 101

A Hotel Nowhere website is beautifully designed one, it may have some Flash animation, perhaps some cool roll over images, maybe even active menu buttons that pop up and disappear as you move across them. It’s likely to have shading and other graphical elements that are visually appealing. And it’s probably got some words written on it too…but they’re secondary to the ‘look.’

The #1 problem with these types of websites (and some are not as bad as the image I painted above) is that they all suffer the same affliction…

They’ve been built in the middle of the Internet Wilderness!

Now let’s think about this for a moment. What good does it do to knock down your nice shiny new ‘Hotel Nowhere’ website and build another one in the same spot if no one knew about the last one?

If your Hotel Nowhere website is ‘out there’, how do you expect people to find you? A real hotel needs roads leading up to the hotel, it has tour guides, maps, TV shows promoting vacations at the resort, radio adverts telling people about the next special, advertising in the nearby towns, agents and reps out there talking it up and generally promoting it and creating buzz.

In other words, your ‘Hotel Nowhere’ (your website) needs to be promoted and connected to the rest of the world AFTER it’s been built. Simply knocking it down and building another is a waste of time!

    — Going from Room to Room

If we continue the Hotel analogy, you need to know that your lobby is your main page (usually index.html or default.html) and it’s where guests arrive once they’ve been brought to your hotel. By the way, the bus or coach analogy is a good one for search engines - think traffic and you’ll start to see the imagery.

So you have people in your lobby. If you expect them to stay you’d better give them a darn good reason to ’stick’ around. And if you want them to explore your hotel you need to give them a map. Oh yes, and more importantly, you will need to ensure that they can get from room (page) to room.

It sounds goofy, but many sites are built with no ‘doors’. A door is a link between pages. I know, you think that I’m wrong - sure You can click on the button and be taken to a page. But did I tell you that search engines are visually impaired?

They don’t see the picture buttons or the image maps like you do; they look for text so they can ‘read’ it. If your doors are not described via text links too, you can expect a lobby full of visitors for about 2 seconds before they get back on the bus and leave.

    — Going from Hotel Nowhere to Hotel Somewhere

Building the site should be the second phase of the project - the first phase should have been creating the architectural Internet Marketing plan. However, this is often not the case and the I.M Architect (consultant) is usually ONLY called once the client realizes they have a ‘Hotel Nowhere’ website on their hands!

The good news is that even if you have done things ‘backwards,’ it can be remedied quite easily, and a good I.M Architect (consultant) can work with your designer and other web resources directing them accordingly for proper changes.

In addition, a good I.M Architect will also help you develop other strategies and tactics for connecting your website to the rest of the world and into your overall Internet Marketing plan. Then, and only then, will you start to significant differences. Your once Nowhere website will have become a found Somewhere site. ♠

Build a Web Site for Peanuts

    May 16th, 2008

Build a Web Site for Peanuts

Untill recently, building a web site was not much fun. You had
to know HTML, FTP and have good design skills. When it was
finished you had to register a domain name and choose a web
    hosting service.

The alternative was to get a web site designer to do all of this
for you but at a price. Generally a good price!

That was how things used to be done.

However, now the technology has moved on and anybody who is
prepared can learn how to create a web site themselves. Today,
we have all-in-one packages that allow you to build a web site,
research the keywords, submit it to the search engines and build
an online store in the one package.

The advantages of these all-in-one packages are that they save
money as all the tools are in the same package. It saves a lot
of time learning how to set up your business and it is easy to
run because of the brilliance of the tools at your disposal.

Two of the best of these web site building packages are Site
    Build It and Third Sphere.

To have a look at the benefits of using Site Build It go to:
    http://www.merchant-account-service.com/sitebuildit.html

To have a look at Third Sphere go to:
    http://www.merchant-account-service.com/thirdsphere.html

The key to these packages is that instead of grappling with the
complex technology of the internet, you can ignore all this and
get on with the vital business of marketing your online business.

Even web site designers are using these all-in-one packages to
save time and passing them on to their customers who assume
building a web site is a technical matter best left to the web
    site designer!

Can You Become A Millionaire with A Yahoo Store?

    April 10th, 2008

In January of 2004, they opened their online yahoo store
weddingfavors.com and the first month they did $11,000 selling
wedding favors at an average price of $2 per item. And that was
before Brad started using what he knew about search engine
optimization and building free search traffic. After all, that
was his day job and this was his wife’s home business. So, all
of the traffic that came to their Yahoo Store the first month
was a result of online advertising.

But click through ad traffic is not the fastest way to attract
customers to a Yahoo Store selling wedding favors or any home
business online. Click through can establish a path, but free
search is the superhighway. Why? Because that’s how most people
find what they’re looking for online. They type some words into
a Yahoo or Google search box and Ta-da; sites related to their
search come up on the screen.

So Brad started plugging in everything he knew about search
engine optimization into the family’s new wedding favors
business. By the third month, their home business site
weddingfavors.com pulled in $60,000 in sales. By the 4th month
it did $130,000 and by August 2004 it shot up to $400,000.

Now, weddingfavors.com is in the Yahoo Top Ten search for the
category: wedding favors and has climbed into the Top Ten on
Google for wedding favors. Isn’t being in the Google Top Ten
    every home business owner’s dream?

The Fallon’s Yahoo Store has merchandise (wedding favors) that a
lot of people search for at a price they are willing to pay.
This translates into volume. They also stock merchandise that
their buyers need in quantities of 100’s and 500’s and more when
they order. This translates into volume - big volume for this
    successful home business.

Let’s stop right here and take a pulse. What does the Yahoo
Store weddingfavors.com have going for it that other home
business owners can learn from? They chose a hot market with a
lot of activity They offered a selection of products that are
right for the market They sold them at competitive prices They
made ordering easy They established good customer service

Could you have these same factors working for your home
business? Of course, you could. To find out more get Brad
Fallon’s book, Stomping the Search Engines by visiting

    Low cost website design company

    April 7th, 2008

There are many companies who build websites, all of which who
want your business. This puts you in a very strong position when
trying to obtain a good deal, a professional looking website at
    a low affordable price.

The world wide web is an excellent way of advertising your
product or business and is a must nowadays for any business.

First you need to find somebody or a company to build and design
your website. Some web designers charge a huge amount of money
so it is quite difficult to make the right choice.

One area you could try first is online auction websites such as
ebay. There may well be a new company who is just starting out
and who are looking at building up a portfolio. They may well at
this early stage be offering their services quite cheaply. This
method also applys to web promotion and
    optimisation/optimization.

Alternativerly I advise people to look into the yellow pages,
look on the internet or ask family and friends if they know of
    anybody.

If you are willing to be patient and make lots of enquiries you
should be able to find yourself a good deal. If you provide all
of the content via a word document you should be able to have
your website built for around £100.

Always look at the portfolio page and have a look at the
websites they have already built. It might be worth seeing what
the page rank of these websites are like and you are also
looking to see if you like the style.

Once the web designer has built your website ask them if they
would add a link from their homepage to your new website. Also
ask them if they would submit the site to all of the search
    engines.

Always remember to add your website address to any
advertisements you have and on any correspondance you send.
